International Nurses Day: Vision on Inmates
Nurses and the Work of the Prisoners & Detainees Department: the role of nurses in promoting and keeping health in the community is with out doubt of utmost significance. Unfortunately the Israeli Prison Service almost does not hire nurses, and their role is given to paramedics. This affects the level of medical care given to inmates, mainly because the training of a paramedic fall short in comparison to that of a nurse, and cannot be considered as an adequate replacement. In some countries in Europe, nurses work in prisons following a special education that trains them to work with inmates. Some train in psychiatry so as to enable them to respond to the special needs of inmates. Most of the medical work in prisons is done by nurses, even replacing the doctor while away.

PHR Israel has a long relationship with the Sheinborn Nursing School. As part of their course on ethics, we give students lectures on dual loyalty and medical ethics, ways and tools to identify marks of violence on inmates and mechanisms that can assist them in addressing such cases.

It is important to state that the Israeli council of nurse played an important role in the struggle against shackling of inmates during hospitalization. Their ethical code on the issue was the most progressive in comparison to that of the Israeli Medical Association, or the Ministry of Health.
