The department receives hundreds of petitions from incarcerated persons who encounter difficulties in receiving medical treatment within the framework of the authority holding them, and from those suffering from abuse, neglect and poor confinement conditions which harm their health. Among those petitioning are men and women, adults and minors, held by the army, the GSS, the IPS and the police. The association operates in the following ways, depending on the nature of the complaint:
• Attorneys’ visits with the inmates. • Examining medical files of inmates by physicians volunteering with Physicians for Human Rights. • Physicians’ visits with the inmates, by physicians volunteering with Physicians for Human Rights. If necessary conducting independent medical examinations, conclusions and recommendations of which are transferred to the incarcerating facility. • Filing prisoners’ petitions and petitions with the High Court of Justice.
During medical treatments, we compile data which enables us to pinpoint the main problems regarding the level of care and the treatment of prisoners and detainees in the incarceration facility, and working to find solutions to these problems.
