Physicians for Human Rights-Israel: The Mobile Clinic: Activity Report 2010

Physicians for Human Rights-Israel operates the Mobile Clinic Project with the goal of addressing ongoing health challenges in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (oPt). PHR-Israel’s Mobile Clinic brings together Israeli and Palestinian health professionals and civil society actors for weekly cooperative medical work in rural Palestinian villages and towns. Within this unique framework, Israeli doctors provide immediate primary care and when necessary, referrals for follow up care, while Palestinian and Israeli Pharmacists dispense medications to patients.

During the project period, the PHR-Israel coordinated
 33 General Clinics
 9 Women's Clinics,
 10 Specialist Clinics
 3 Surgery Days
 2 Training Conferences
In 2010, the Mobile Clinic Program provided medical attention to
9,190 individuals in the West Bank, including
Specialized services for approximately 809 women
 Medical care for 1,622 children.

The mobile clinic creates a unique framework for joint Israeli and Palestinian medical work and serves as a gesture of trust and solidarity with Palestinian patients and medical professionals. Through this program, PHR-Israel aims to foster greater recognition for human rights values among the Israeli  medical community in order to sensitize the public in Israel and abroad to the need for a change in Israeli policy toward the occupied Palestinian territory.

From the very beginning, the main partner of PHR-Israel in these activities has been the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), which is today the largest primary healthcare provider in the West Bank. Over the years, PHRIsrael has also built partnerships with other local actors. PHR-Israel also works with non-governmental, community organizations that act locally for their constituents, as well as with  rofessional medical unions and international organizations.

General, Women's, and Specialist Clinics

In 2010, PHR-Israel carried out a total of 56 mobile clinics. Mobile clinics featured internists, family health professionals, and a variety of specialists. This year, over 630 medical staff joined us in our weekly mobile clinics, providing treatment, examinations, and referrals to villagers in all areas of the West Bank.

As part of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel's Mobile Clinic Project, the Women's Clinic serves to promote the health of Palestinian women as an important source of empowerment, strength, and status in Palestinian society. This year marks the 3rd consecutive year of PHR-Israel operating the Women's Clinics. During 2010, 9 Women's Clinics took place, providing medical services and follow up to 809 female patients. In addition, at all four Women's Clinics, dozens of women came to renew medications for chronic conditions...
