PHRI Demands an Inquiry into the Harm Caused to Medical Personnel and Facilities During “Guardian of the Walls”

23 cases of damage to medical facilities were documented during the latest assault on Gaza. In a letter we sent to the authorities this week, we demanded that they initiate an inquiry into alleged violations of international humanitarian law and suspected war crimes.

During the hostilities in Gaza this past May, hundreds of civilians were killed, among them medical staff, and thousands more were injured. Property, buildings, and medical equipment were extensively damaged. Alongside the medical teams present at the hospitals hit during the strikes were dozens of patients, including injured civilians.

In a letter sent to the Minister of Defense, the Director General of the Ministry of Health, the Attorney General, and the Military Advocate General, we stressed that harming medical facilities and personnel allegedly constitute a violation of international humanitarian law and may amount to a war crime. As such, an independent, effective and transparent investigation must be initiated into these alleged crimes. The investigation should at the very least be conducted at the same level of a criminal investigation, and at its conclusion, those responsible should be brought to justice.
